How do I clean fine gold jewelry?

Fine gold jewelry should be cleaned regularly with liquid dish/laundry soap, warm water and an old toothbrush to remove lotions, oils, grime, dirt, food and perfume. Many gold pieces have set stones, therefore it is very important to first place a wash cloth or drain cover in your sink before you clean your jewelry in case a stone comes out. You want to retrieve the stone before it goes down the drain! Stones can loosen and fall out of jewelry over time, especially rings which get a LOT of wear. Take your jewelry to a jeweler regularly to have your stones and settings checked as well as any clasps or links. Be proactive to fix these things before a stone gets lost or a whole bracelet goes mysteriously missing.

How do you clean sterling jewelry?

Sterling silver jewelry is best cleaned with liquid dish or laundry soap, warm water and an old toothbrush. Clean your jewelry regularly to remove lotions, perfumes, skin oils, dirt and grime such as food particles. This will keep your jewelry looking it's best, especially if there are clear stones or crevices that can attract dirt.

A jewelry polishing cloth is the perfect instrument to polish sterling jewelry to hit the high relief areas and showcase that high luster. Jewelry polishing cloths can be found through many retailers and are very inexpensive.

How often does SawDust FINERY run specials?

We periodically run specials based on a theme. If something you love was once on sale and you missed it, you are welcome to make an offer. You never know!

If there is something in particular you are looking for and don't see it you are welcome to message us and we will add those listings first. We typically decide on new listings based on previous interest and jewelry trends.

What if I don't want to buy anything but I have a general question about one of your items or just want to chat about jewelry?

Please feel free to send me a chat message any time, even if you are not buying. I love to talk about jewelry and share knowledge. If you know something about one of my items I would LOVE to hear about it.

What is patina and blacking on sterling silver?

Sterling jewelry is prized for it's luster and unique silky texture.

Many sterling pieces have a patina which is a naturally the darkened area in the deep cracks and crevices of the jewelry. The high relief areas stay shiny if worn often or polished with a jewelry polishing cloth.

Many pieces of jewelry have a blackening finish or antique finish that you will notice is different than patina. This is a purposeful process applied by the artist to the grooves and the crevices of a piece of jewelry. You do not want to remove this finish ever. This blackening finish creates a beautiful contrast between the shiny high luster reliefs and the darkened crevices. This contrast allows the design of the jewelry to stand out.
